Broward County now has its first female Jamaican-American Judge! Jackie Powell featured by jamaicaglobalonline on September 13, won the seat in a run-off with Allison Gilman in the just concluded November 6 election by polling 254,826 against her Republican rival’s 237,921 votes. It was also a good election night for two other Jamaican-Americans as Richard Campbell and Denise Grant took the two vacant seats to become Commissioners of Lauderhill city. Both Campbell and Grant were born in Jamaica but settled in South Florida after first moving to New York.
Campbell is well-known in Broward County circles as President of the Caribbean American Soccer Association.
The performances of Jamaican-Americans Powell, Campbell and Grant were especially satisfying for the Jamaican-American and Caribbean community of South Florida after the disappointing defeats of Democrats Gillum and Nelson and in the State Governorship and Senate races ,respectively.
