BOOKS, BOOKS, AND MORE BOOKS! Ian Randle Publishers takes Jamaica to the world

ian randle publishers

Ian Randle Publishers (IRP)has been telling the story of the Jamaican people since it opened its doors in 1991. Today, 27 years later, this dynamic publishing house continues to educate and entertain Jamaicans and the world by documenting the country’s history and culture in all forms and giving its people a voice, no matter where in the world they live.

In 2018 IRP will add close to 20 new books to the extensive backlist of over 300 titles already  in print. Perennial favourites like Enid Donaldson’s cookbook The Real Taste of Jamaica and Sherlock and Bennett’s outstanding history Story of the Jamaican People can be found in the kitchens and on the bookshelves of homes from Birmingham to Brooklyn and even as far as Bali in Indonesia!  Reggae Routes remains after 20 years, the best historical survey of Jamaican music and the lives of outstanding nation builders like Marcus Garvey, Louise Bennett, Sam Sharpe and sportsmen like Arthur Wint and the incomparable Usain St Leo Bolt have all been recorded and published for posterity.

Each year the public has come to expect from IRP at least one major new work that joins the list of the “must have” books eagerly awaited even before it is formally released. What will that book be in 2018?

Jamaicaglobalonline recently caught up with Christine Randle the second-generation head of Ian Randle Publishers to get a sneak preview of what is to be the BIG new release in 2018 and she did not disappoint. Work is feverishly underway to publish this coming December a manuscript that few knew existed and will surprise and even shock readers with its revelations. Michael Manley: In His Own Voice will let readers into the innermost thoughts, terrors, secrets and memories of Jamaica’s most controversial leader of modern times. Many books have been written about Michael Manley and there have been many interpretations of his tumultuous life both private and public. This one comes straight from the ‘horse’s mouth’ – Manley himself in a ‘no holds barred’ interview conducted over a 3-year period by his wife Glynne. But what makes this work so special, powerful and challenging in an exciting way for Christine Randle is that she has the Michael Manley voice to go with the text! She plans to first release the text of the interviews by year-end and then shortly after the audio-tape will be made available. This is a first for IRP and a first for Jamaican publishing.

Like all IRP books, both current and backlist, one does not have to be in Jamaica or even need to visit a bookstore to acquire the Manley interviews when published. The company’s books are distributed in the UK, Europe, China, Japan and Australia by the Eurospan Group and in North America and the rest of the world by Ingram. Of course, there is the ubiquitous Amazon.com which will also have a Kindle edition.
