A visit to Liberty Hall located at 76 King Street downtown Kingston is a must on any tour of historic sites in the capital and an educational treat for anyone interested in the life, times and philosophy of Jamaica’s first National Hero, Rt. Excellent, Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
Liberty Hall was the venue for the 9th annual Marcus Garvey Lecture organized by the Institute of Jamaica to commemorate the 131st anniversary of the birth of the National Hero on August 17, 2018.
There were presentations by students of the Institute of Jamaica’s Junior Centre and a dramatic choral presentation incorporating many of Garvey’s inspirational messages by Tribe Sankofa both of which were well received by the appreciative audience.
The highlight lecture entitled “Black Performance Black Legacies and African Futures: An African Perspective on Marvel’s Black Panther and Luke Cage was delivered by Dr Nicosia Shakes of the Africana Studies Dept, College of Wooster in the USA. After a lively question and answer session, visitors were afforded a free tour of the facility and an opportunity to view and purchase African-inspired crafts as well as publications on the life and works of Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
